What Do You See When You Look In The Mirror?
Directors Kristelle Laroche and Ben Mullinkosson interviewed 63 women and asked each what they saw in the mirror when they looked at themselves. From a cancer survivor to a young girl getting her ears pierced for the first time, the short documentary features women of all shapes, colors and backgrounds.
At the beginning of the interviews, each woman starts with negative comments about what she sees in the mirror with remarks such as, “Sometimes I still look in the mirror and say what’s wrong with me?” and, “I look in the mirror and go ‘Oh, I’m not 25 anymore.'” For many of us, mirrors are a stark confrontation of what we don’t like about ourselves or the battles we’ve faced that have left us scarred.
As the conversations evolved however, each woman realized that these battle scars and imperfections are something we all carry with us and aren’t necessarily flaws.
Towards the end of the interviews, the crew takes a picture of each woman and asks her to write what she sees when she looks at it. Here are some of the brave and beautiful answers:
